When each competitor would celebrate
The vict'ry by great Olympus' son
O'er faithless Augias, who direful fate
Woo'd, when he sought to foil th' avenging one
A erown adorn'd the conqueror, which none
But he would value or esteem a prize;
So with the Poet who has nobly won
What is not glorious in others' eyes ;
When circled with bright fame, has ho not more
Tho' earth refuse, perchance, her goldon store,
Than, lacking that, creation could supply ?
Yea, could such exist, e'en altho' unknown,
Would, worthy of the sacred name, alone
Shine liko a star that 'scapes fair science' piercing eye.
